This commitment to Maryland public schools stems from insights gained during eight demonstration projects overseen by the National Park Foundation (NPF) and National Park Service in seven states. MCPS and PGCPS piloted their programs under this grant. VFF continues to support NPF’s Youth Engagement & Education programs. Specific learnings from the Field Science demonstration projects can be found on their website.
Maryland Field Studies
In 2011, Maryland became the first state in the Nation to require students to be environmentally literate as a high school graduation requirement. In further support of environmental literacy, the state established the requirement of three MWEEs (Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences) at each level of education.
The Veverka Family Foundation supports five school districts and their nonprofit partners who provide teacher professional development and student field studies. A specific focus is placed on grade specific MWEEs and programming that aligns with their environmental literacy curriculum. The diversity of these school districts demonstrates inclusivity of our grants. We also champion opportunities to further climate literacy and green careers in recognition of the increased awareness in this area.
